Student Leadership

At Dixons Newall Green, our students truly embody our values and drivers in everything that they do. We are proud to have the chance to work with our young people to give them the opportunity to lead change across the academy, the local community and beyond by leading on initiatives that they are passionate about as a student body.  Our student leadership structure enables us to do this in a variety of ways, ensuring that the students at Dixons Newall Green recognise that their voice is important and will be heard.

School Council:

School Council is an opportunity for students to lead discussions on issues that are important to them and their local community.  The council is chaired by our Head Students and there are representatives from each year group, from every House who have been democratically elected by their advisories.  School Council as an opportunity to listen to what students feel would help to improve the lives of young people in Wythenshawe, and lead initiatives based on the outcomes of the discussions held.  We are proud to partner with Citizens UK, a people-powered alliance who build positive working relationships between communities, elected power-holders and businesses, making sure everyone’s voice is heard.  More information about the work of our School Council will be shared via our Twitter account: @DixonsNGA

House:

We have 5 Houses at Dixons Newall Green:

Ben NevisSnowdonBen LomondCatbellsScafell Pike

Each House is named after renowned fells and peaks from across Britain.  We talk about climbing our mountain to living a fulfilling life and make reference to the hard work and determination that our students will require to reach their peak.

The House system supports our students to live by our driver of Purpose – doing something in service of something larger than yourself.  Students represent their House in every aspect of school life and regularly participate in competitions to support the progress of their House.  For example, weekly attendance, Golden Ticket achievements and Sparx Maths competitions create a running total of House points. Students can earn additional House points by attending extra-curricular clubs after school or by participating in subject competitions that are run in lessons each cycle.  There is a weekly Pastoral Robust Reading session in which key messages and updates on House competitions are shared.  At the end of each cycle, the House Champions are announced. Points achieved from across the year culminate to the annual finale at the end of cycle 3 when the House Cup is awarded to the House with the most points.

Black History Month

In the UK, Black History Month happens every October.

It gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture. During October, students at DNG heard about significant figures in Black History as well as having the opportunity to enter a competition to complete their own research about people they felt were significant too. Lilly and Amelia blew us away with their winning entries.

The Inktober Challenge

Jake Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavour with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.  Students are DNG joined the challenge and did not disappoint with their inktastic creations!

Lest We Forget Poetry Competition

In November this academic year, students at DNG had the opportunity to enter the ‘Young Writers’ competition, writing a poem in remembrance of fallen service people across the world. A national competition, every student will have the opportunity to see their story published in a book! We were so impressed with our entries. See some of our entries below:
