Co-curriculum
Each week, all students in Year 7 and Year 8 spend an afternoon taking part in Co-Curricular electives. Students can change their electives each cycle in a range of enriching activities as part of our autonomy approach. For more information about the Co-Curricular offer for each year group, see the information outlined below.
Year 7 elective options:
Chinese culture | Students learn about Chinese heritage and traditions. They learn about the ancient world as well as celebrating Chinese inventions like the compass, paper and gunpowder. Students will learn traditional art and crafting techniques as well as getting to try some Chinese cuisine. |
Health and fitness | Students learn a range of fitness training techniques including interval training, circuit training, fartlek training and continuous training. Students will develop their teamwork and leadership skills culminating in them leading their own fitness session. |
Board games | Students test their competitive streak, learning and playing a range of board games including Chess, Articulate and draughts. Students will work both independently and as part of a team enjoying getting to know their peers in this fun elective. |
Spanish culture | Students learn about Spanish heritage and culture by exploring and learning through Spanish festivals. Students get to try Spanish food, learn Spanish dance and create Spanish themed art work too |
Horrible histories | Students learn about the truly gruesome histories of the past. From the Rotten Romans to the Terrible Tudors; from the Vile Victorians to the Awesome Egyptians, students get to find out about the weird and wonderful experiences of ancient to modern civilisations. |
Debate | Students learn the art of argument in our debate elective. Students use their autonomy to decide on topics that they are passionate about. They work together to make rousing speeches and carefully crafted arguments to persuade their peers that their perspective is the right one. |
Year 8 Elective Options:
Talk sport podcasts | Students learn about the ‘behind the scenes’ life of a sporting presenter and podcaster. Students get to research current sporting events to write and record their very own podcast to review the sport of their choice, including creating a sporting commentary of a specific game or match. |
Health and fitness | Students learn a range of fitness training techniques including interval training, circuit training, fartlek training and continuous training. Students will develop leadership skills culminating in them leading their own fitness session. |
Drama | From acting and directing through to devising and designing original pieces of theatre, students have the opportunity to shine on the stage in drama. From performing Shakespeare to mastering the skill of improvisation, students will build their confidence and ability to lead in this elective. |
Create your own world | Students use their imagination to create their ideal world. From mountains to rivers; from forests to grasslands, students explore the wonders of our planet and forge a new world of their own making. |
Mathematical art | Students explore how the beauty of art and the formulaic structure of geometry can work together to form wonderful creations. Students learn about the history of the Celtic knot, how symmetry lays the foundations for beautiful patterns and designs while getting to have a go at designing and making their own mathematical art. |
First give | During Cycle 2 all students in Year 8 will take part in the First Give social action project. Students learn about social issues in their local community and choose the issues which are important to them to research. Students plan and deliver social action activities (fundraising, awareness raising, volunteering) in support of a local charity that support the social issue the class has selected. Students learn public speaking skills and put together creative presentations about the work of their charity and what their class has done to support it. A panel of judges rate each class based on their social action and presentations. The winning class wins a First Give grant of £1,000 for their charity. |
